| DAMNIT NBC!!! |
[24 Jul 2006|10:55am] |
ugh. today could have been awesome. however, that is not the case
I saw the news that Tina Fey was leaving SNL for an NBC prime-time comedy about a late-night sketch show. (fox news). Its called 30Rock. ok, fine. SNL has been struggling, Tina's sketches aren't very good, but weekend update usually isn't bad.
"Hey, wait, wasn't there gonna be a show on NBC writen by aaron sorkin about a late-night sketch show?" ::::Checks imdb::: "Oh, yeah, he is. its called 'Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip' "
Tina's show has A bunch of SNL cronies and Alec Baldwin, and Aaron's show has DL hughley and matthew perry. (imdb - 30 rock imdb - studio 60 ).
Is this NBC's plan for next season? launch two of every show, with one setup as the failure? (see fox - "american dad" and "family guy"). I don't see either of these doing well. Tina's show will run into the same issues that have killed SNL, and sorkin's show won't be understood by people and not watched by even fewer - "DL hughley? I hated that show!" And I wont get to watch anything funny all season.
welcome to the # 5 spot, NBC.

| NBC - my fav. network |
[16 May 2006|01:30pm] |
NBC has announced a new show they are working on with Aaron Sorkin (who, I recently discovered this weekend wrote A few good men).
http://www.newsone.ca/westfallweeklynews/stories/index.php?action=fullnews&id=186959 (its an AP article, so theres probably a better link out there, but this was the one fark linked to)
FTA: It‘s about the turmoil and romance backstage at a network comedy sketch show, and NBC is telegraphing its importance by scheduling it at 9 p.m. on Thursdays — once the time slot of "Cheers" and "Seinfeld."
Holy Crap. Sports Night 2. Im a little nervous about the show being a 'dramedy' about a comedy show. Sports night worked really well b/c the show they were producing wasn't supposed to be always funny. A few of the best episodes revolved around serious issues/news stories on the show. Oh well, I'm sure ill still watch it.
In other news, I don't understand how NBC is 4th. The office, my name is earl, scrubs, conan, are all fantastic shows that I refuse to miss. I think the only show I want to watch more is House or family guy. The rest of my tv watching is done on mindless boring shows like csi, ncis, and random sitcoms on the other networks.

So, I got the good ol' quarterly bonus from work on friday, and prompty drove out to the camera store. Ive had my eye on a DSLR ever since I took the photography class at school, and I recently figured that I had the money to finally get one. I ended up with a canon rebel xt, with a 28-135 IS USM lens, for anyone that knows about these things. Im REALLY happy with it.
I still don't have a great photo system that integrates into my other site, so for right now, im using flickr. [link]. Most of the pics there are from the trip i took today to a nearby park. turns out flickr doesn't really support full-sized images, and is already warning me about my monthly upload limit, so I might be looking into a paid account with them, or some other hosting system. If anyone has any suggestions for any of the above, please let me know,

| Your AUX CLOCK$ is NUL, and the CON is PRN |
[06 Apr 2006|04:53pm] |
To anyone who doesn't know, Microsoft has 'reserved names' that can't exist as files or folders Anywhere on your system.
Also, if this file happens to get created by a program or script, you might not be able to open it with said program, although explorer might open it. I think id be ok if they weren't allowed to exist in a certain root path on a system, but no.
Anyway, the most complete list of keywords to avaoid that i could find is: CON, PRN, AUX, CLOCK$, NUL, COM1-COM9, LPT1-LPT9
Thanks a ton. microsoft - how can we bewilder you for 3 days?

So, I was fooling around with google's translator today, and found it yields some interesting results if you tell it to start with the wrong language. For example, when doing german to english on my other site, "oh well, time for dinner, and then prolly back into work for a little bit…" turned into "oh wave, time for more dinner, and then prolly bake into work for A little bit&"
Not sure what's going on here, I mean word substitutions kind of make sense... well->wave, back->bake, but why the changes in capitalization and adding of the word 'more'? Maybe this curiosity just comes from not knowing anything about the german language (other than its impossible to say anything nice in it).
I'll leave you with another one: "New version out today that should fix a lot of the invalid xml and odd characters" "New version out today that should fixed A plumb bob OF the invalid xml and odd character. "

| RoseRSS (public announcement) |
[16 Feb 2006|03:02pm] |
So, those of you that follow my other blog already know about this. But I figured more people might want to know that over the past couple weeks I've been developing an unofficial RSS feed for the Rose-Hulman News page. Its a perl script that scrapes the content out of the pages, dumps it into a database, and builds the xml file for the 20 most recent stories.
The Rose webmaster pretty much shrugged off the concept of them doing it, and the Rose page is like the only site that I read that doesn't have a feed. Ive been working on it for about 2 weeks, and this is actually like the 3rd revision on the script, so it should be pretty stable.
So anyway, without further ado: RoseRSS.xml If one of you with paid accounts wanted to make a LJ syndication friend for it, that'd be cool, for sure.

| A followup on the stupidity that is fox |
[18 Jan 2006|11:48pm] |
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060118/en_nm/leisure_fox_dc
Fox is canceling arrested development because it can only get 4 million viewers. apparently malcolm and that 70's show are getting canceled too, but i didn't even know there were still new ones of those being made. (Wasn't 70's already in the 80's anyway? or was it just '79 4 years in a row?)
Rumor has it that other networks are considering picking up arrested (ABC and Showtime). I guess abc is hard up for comedies. Im not gonna pay for showtime, but ill get the dvd's when they come out...
This kinda makes me wonder about if anyone is working on a direct-to-dvd (or other non-broadcast medium) series. How much money does a tv show make off a network versus dvd sales anyway? aren't there more hoops and junk to deal with on tv anyway? I have no data, but i would wager that shows like firefly, arrested, and family guy made more $ on dvd than during their broadcast and rerun schedules. I mean, with more dvrs coming, who even watches tv ads anymore?
I guess dvd would be kind of a hard model for a new show, b/c nobody is going to pay 50$ for a full 'season' of shows they dont know anything about. maybe this is where the video download services like apple and google come in. I'd pay a couple bucks an episode if i could burn em to a dvd or transfer the license towards the purchase of the disks....
i wouldn't be the first to suggest that broadcast tv is dying, but maybe a show like one of the aforementioned fox shows or some of the miniseries on scifi that have a decent following would be an intersting test market for this kind of stuff. Lets face it, people who like dr phil are not going to be the people who drive/test this idea. I think it'd be cool to have my pvr able to download stuff to watch whenever i wanted - "Oh, a new scrubs was release last night. lets watch that!" Broadcast wont go away because of sporting events and other live-type stuff. (like the morons who watch the 'news': inaccurate 'reports' of what happened 3 days ago, followed by 15 minutes of "IT'S GON' RAIN!! (maybe)"
Oh well, if it keeps family guy alive, restores futurama, arrested, or firefly, or allows new 'edgier' and creative shows to find an audience, bring it on. Im getting sick of 14 million crime dramas(suddenly, CSI:Terre Haute doesn't seem too far away), and fox pulling stupid scheduling tricks. Showing your show for 6 hours in 2 days is not a good way for people to like it. Prison Break made me angry over the summer(who the hell knows how thats staying around for a second half-season or whatever...), and now that 24 did it, im just boycotting 24 for no good reason.
And don't even get me started on 'American Idol'

Terre Haute's NBC affiliate, WTWO, is not airing "The Book of Daniel" due to complaints from 'viewers,' even though the show hasn't even premiered. Apparently, the trailers make the American Family Association think that the show contains "Anti-Christian Bigotry." Not really sure where they get that from.
http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060105/ENTERTAINMENT/601050485
The best part? "We expect other NBC affiliates will join WTWO in their decision," Wildmon said. Who has ever used Terre Haute as a model for Anything?

| Photographers, ethics, and things that really annoy me |
[22 Dec 2005|06:11pm] |
I enjoy photography. I love getting out and photographing people, events, places. I really like looking through other photos, so I was looking at Reuter's Pictures of the year today. Some were quite good, and Im very envious of the people that can make a living doing this stuff. However, the photo below really makes me angry. I don't really get truly angry about many things, but every time i see a photo like this, I can't understand the photographer. How can you stand there (this photo feels real close, maybe he's a mile away with the best telephoto in the world, but i doubt it) and take the time to snap a photo when theres people who need help? I understand conditions where its unsafe, but i really dont see a huge danger here. Maybe a story needs to be told here, but maybe there would have been less of a story if the photographer had helped out BEFORE snapping the photos [I'm sure that this was not the only exposure taken...] How do the people in these situations feel about a photographer just staring at them? Ive seen plenty of stories of grieving people, where the photographer was a clear presence to them. The camera is not one way glass here, people.
I really dont know where i was going with this, but I really dont understand how photographers like this guy can sleep at night.

| Steve's Law of Business |
[21 Dec 2005|10:38pm] |
1. There are gullible, uneducated people. 2. Other people will take advantage of them.
So now the question is... Do we help or hinder capitalism by being educated? You need semi-intelligent people to take advantage of the gullible ones, but if everyone becomes educated, they are all too smart to put $ into the lesser businesses, and all goods end up at the lowest denominator. Oversimplification, but my brain needed a break from AJAX.
